Purple People Pleaser // Thursday, October 9

Posted: Thursday, October 9

One Year Bible Reading Guide:

Jeremiah 12:1-14:10
1 Thessalonians 1:1-2:8
Psalm 79:1-13
Proverbs 24:30-34

Verse of the day:

For we speak as messengers approved by God to be entrusted with the Good News. Our purpose is to please God, not people. He alone examines the motives of our hearts.” (1 Thessalonians 2:4)

Would you consider yourself to be a people pleaser? I think we all can be tempted to be people pleasers from time to time.  We fear letting others down or disappointing them.   This isn’t always a bad fear—at times it can help motivate us to not be selfish and to consider what other people’s wants and feelings are.

The problem comes in when we start elevating what other people want over what God wants. Sometimes we try to convince ourselves that God will understand if we place Him on the back burner to please other people.   Paul says though that our one purpose is to please God and not others.  Doing things His way should always trump trying to make someone else happy! Don’t allow people pleasing to push you into doing something that God says is sin!

We can expect that we will have to make tough decisions when we put pleasing God first! We can expect that people won’t always understand our motives and might even accuse of having impure motives by trying to please God.  But Paul says that God knows the true motives of our hearts.  Even when people don’t understand why we are doing the things that we do- God always does!

What areas of your life do you face the most temptation to please people over God?  Remember Paul’s words, “Our purpose is to please God, not people.”
