Verse of the day:
Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them. (Hebrews 11: 16)
Ah, yes, Hebrews, chapter 11, the “Hall of Faith”. The chapter starts off with the familiar verse about faith that says, “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.” (v.1) Many “ancients” were commended for this faith. Our reading today includes Abel, Enoch, Noah and Abraham and the list goes on from there in the remaining part of the chapter. How about you? Do you consider yourself part of a list of people who live by faith. You and I better because verse 6 says “without faith it is impossible to please God.” It is by faith we believe God exists (v.6), made everything (v.3), and that “ He rewards those who earnestly seek Him”. (v.6b)
The writer of Hebrews says these people were “longing for a better country—a heavenly one.” (v. 16) In the latter part of verse 16 it says that God “has prepared a city for them.” This is that reward. If you want to hear it from the New Testament, Jesus said this in John 14. “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you.”
Have faith. Heaven awaits. Like those of old, we are just passing through on our way home.
