If God's Not In It...

Verse of the day:
Unless the Lord builds a house, the work of the builders is wasted. Unless the Lord protects a city, guarding it with sentries will do no good. (Psalm 127:1)
When I was a kid I liked to experiment in the kitchen. I liked trying to make cookies, macaroni & cheese, and help my mom with whatever she was making. Sometimes though I would get inspiration to try making soups without any help and without a recipe. I would place a slice of American cheese in water (because who doesn’t love cheese soup?) thrown in some milk and add whatever I thought would taste good. Those soups were always a disaster. Whenever I tried to go out on my own thinking I knew best it was always a disaster. I always had much more success when I had the help of my mom and a recipe.
Often we can get caught up in thinking that we know how to run our lives best and leave God out of the equation. We can put a lot of blood, sweat & tears into things that God has not blessed. We find ourselves working so hard to make things work only to have disaster and failure be the result. God has given us the recipe of how to live life through His Word. When we open it up and learn to do things His way He comes along side of us and blesses our work.
This Psalm reminds us that if God isn’t in what we are doing we are only wasting our effort. If you find yourself involved in a work that God is not in I encourage you to reevaluate if it is something you really want to waste your effort on. Devote your time and energy to tasks that God is in and your effort will never be wasted.
