One Year Bible Reading Guide:

Judges 4:1-5:31
Luke 22:35-53
Psalm 94:1-23
Proverbs 14:3-4

Verse of the day:

Father, if you are willing, please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine. (Luke 22:42)

Every day that we wake up we are in a tug-a-war. The battle over if we are going to make decisions today based on what we want to do or decisions based on what God would like us to do. When Jesus prays this prayer He is in the midst of that battle. Jesus came to this earth with a very specific mission and was about to complete it; but it was a mission that would cost Him everything and would include much suffering.

A lot of us struggle when God asks us to do something that is out of our comfort zone, let alone something that could involve potential involve loss or a form of suffering or persecution.  Think about what the outcome would have been if Jesus had given in to His own will – we would all be lost without any hope. There are things that God may ask us to do or situations that we may be  asked to endure that may be hard & difficult. You can very easily say “No” or say “It’s my life and I will live it the way that I want to” – God has given you a free will to make that choice. But at what cost will you insist on following your own will? Many people today are dealing with the pain and heartache of decisions years ago when they chose their will instead of God’s will.

What area are you still playing tug-a-war with God over? Is there something that he has asked you to do that is hard? Is there something he has asked you to give up that you don’t want to? Let God win in this area tell Him today, “Father, I want your will to be done, not mine.”
