One Year Bible Reading Guide:

1 Samuel 10:1-11:15
John 6:43-71
Psalm 107:1-43
Proverbs 15:1-3

Verse of the day:

Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go?  You have the words of eternal life”.  (John 6:68)

John 6:66 & 67 says that “many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.  ‘You do not want to leave too, do you?’  Jesus asked the Twelve.”  It’s after these verses that Peter responds with “Lord, to whom shall we go?  You have the words of eternal life” and “We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God”. (vv. 68 &69)

As a child did your parents ever tell you “You don’t know how good you have it”.  Usually statements like these were followed by stories of starving children in China or stories of themselves as kids walking to school 10 miles in 3 feet of snow uphill both ways.  Our parents were merely trying to get us to appreciate what we had and… eat our vegetables.  Peter’s response to Jesus’ question reveals that Peter knew how good he had it.  “It doesn’t get any better than this.  Who else would we follow?  We’re already following the Holy One of God who has the words of eternal life.  Nope, I’m good.”  (Pastor Dennis paraphrase)

I’m always saddened when I hear of or see someone who used to follow Christ not following Him.  I think to myself “They didn’t realize how good they had it?”  My prayer for them is that like the Prodigal Son they would realize how good they had it and return home.  How about you?  Be like Peter and realize how good you have it and follow Jesus all the days of your life and never turn back or, return back to Him today like the Prodigal Son did. (Luke 15:11-24)  It doesn’t get any better than knowing, loving and serving, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, the Holy One of God.
