2 Kings 3:1-4:17
Verse of the day:
Elisha said to him, “Tell her, ‘You have gone to all this trouble for us. Now what can be done for you? Can we speak on your behalf to the king or the commander of the army?’” She replied, “I have a home among my own people.” (2 Kings 4:13)
If anyone knew some secrets to being content, it was this Shunemite woman, and Paul of course (Philippians 4:11-13). Verse 8 says she was a well-to-do woman. She did something with what she had. Her and her husband built the prophet Elisha a spare room for him to stay in when he was passing through (v. 10). She knew what Jr. Asparagus teaches in a recent VeggieTales video. “If you got enough to spare, you got enough to share”. She was generous and generosity is a key to being content. Be a giver.
When Elisha wanted to show kindness back to her for what she did, he asked her what he could do for her. Her response shows that she was also thankful for what she has. She simply says, “I have a home among my own people” (v. 13). As if to say, “I have what I need, I’m good. What more could I want?” She didn’t ask for more, but was thankful for what she had. Another key to being content is to be thankful. Be grateful.
In a world of gimee gimee gimee I want I want, it can become easy to get caught up in materialism and keeping up with the Joneses . But instead take some cues from the shunemite woman and be generous and thankful. This will help us to remain content with what God has blessed us with already.
