Idol Chaser // Thursday, July 31

Posted: Thursday, July 31

One Year Bible Reading Guide:

2 Chronicles 29:1-36
Romans 14:1-23
Psalm 24:1-10
Proverbs 20:12

Verse of the day:

Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord? Who may stand in his holy place? The one who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not trust in an idol or swear by a false god. (Psalm 24:3-4)

We don’t see too many idols in the forms of statues anymore but that doesn’t mean that we don’t still have idols. Idols have taken different forms as time has gone on.  An idol is anything that we put in the place that God should be in our lives. Sometimes these idols pop into our lives as money, a relationship, technology, sex and so on. We begin looking to these things (or people) to fill a need that only God was supposed to fill. We begin chasing after them in a way that we were created to chase after God.

Idols will keep us out of standing in God’s holy place.  They will keep us from having clean hands and a pure heart to enter into his presence.  In the Old Testament idols were dealt with by tearing them down and destroying them. Deuteronomy 12:3 “Break down their altars, smash their sacred stones and burn their Asherah poles in the fire; cut down the idols of their gods and wipe out their names from those places.”

God is more fulfilling than anything that we could try to put in His place. He is the only one that is worthy of our worship and our praise.  Is there anything in your life that you have elevated higher than God?  Do you put your full trust in Him or do you look towards something else for comfort and protection.  Ask God to help you identify what may be an idol in your life and then take the steps necessary to tear it down.
