Keeping A Nice, Shiny, Pure Church // Saturday, August 9

Posted: Saturday, August 9

One Year Bible Reading Guide:

Ezra 8:21-9:15
1 Corinthians 5:1-13
Psalm 31:1-8
Proverbs 21:1-2

Verse of the day:

God will judge those on the outside; but as the Scriptures say, “You must remove the evil person from among you."
(1 Corinthians 5:13)

Wow! Paul is going after the church in Corinth! Paul says, “I told you not to associate with people who indulge in sexual sin. But I wasn’t talking about unbelievers who indulge in sexual sin, or are greedy, or cheat people, or worship idols. You would have to leave this world to avoid people like that.” We always say that Jesus was a friend to sinners, and Paul would certainly agree. We should by no means disassociate ourselves from the lost and the dying. We must be light in this world.

Paul continues, “I meant you are not to associate with anyone who claims to be a believer yet indulges in sexual sin, or is greedy, or worships idols, or is abusive, or is a drunkard, or cheats people. Don’t even eat with such people.” Paul says, “Don’t you realize that this sin is like a little yeast that spreads through the whole batch of dough?” These are strong words that don’t leave a lot of room for misinterpretation. To size it down, Paul is saying: let the world be the world, and let the church be the church.

Heavenly father, give us wisdom in our relationships today. Let us be light to a dying world, and let us guard the purity of your church that all may come to know you.
