The New Life Slogan, "For Others" // Saturday, August 16

1 Corinthians 10:14-33
Verse of the day:
Don’t be concerned for your own good but for the good of others. (1 Corinthians 10:24)
This verse reminds me of a song that we used to sing when I was a kid in kid’s church. The lyrics were “J-O-Y, J-O-Y, I’ll tell you what it means, put Jesus first and yourself last and others in-between” It was a fun little song to sing but not as much fun to put into practice! The song was trying to teach us that in order to find true joy and fulfillment that Jesus always needs to be first, and then put others interests and what is best for them before ourselves.
The concept is a little counter culture and counter intuitive. When we hear popular company slogans like “have it your way” it’s easy to take that and live your life that way instead of just applying it to how you order your burger. Paul here is giving us a new slogan to live our lives by, one that if we live it out will involve much self-sacrifice.
Jesus modeled what this looks like when he came to earth. He spent His time here not pursuing His own comfort, pleasure or desires but spent it pouring into the bettering of others. He stayed obedient to His Father when it wasn’t easy and when it cost Him everything. He gave us the best example of how to follow a difficult principle. Have you become too focused on yourself? In what areas of your life do you need to start concerning yourself with the good of others above yourself? Like the children’s song talks about true joy can only really be found when we live our lives with Jesus is first, others are second, and ourselves last.
