Focus On Mercy, Not Misery // Friday, August 29

Posted: Friday, August 29

One Year Bible Reading Guide:

Job 31:1-33:33
2 Corinthians 3:1-18
Psalm 43:1-5
Proverbs 22:8-9

Verse of the day:

Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again — my Savior and my God! (Psalm 43:5)

I like David. David was a man’s man. He killed a lion and a bear with his own hands and struck down Goliath with a sling shot. At the same time he was also an artist; a harpist and a poet, which probably made him a lady’s man. In short, David had the whole package. However this didn’t prevent him from experiencing a roller coaster of emotions. Many times the Psalms are raw with his discouragement with God and others. He cries out in Psalms 43:2, 'You are God my stronghold. Why have you rejected me?' David pins his pain and struggles on God.

When you experience pain in life do you acknowledge that God has allowed it? Although that may not give you a warm and cozy feeling, it would be much more unsettling to believe that pain and suffering is occurring in your life and God is not powerful enough to do anything about it. Scripture is clear; God is sovereign and in his wisdom he allows us to go through emotionally difficult times like David. Pain is not random, God can redeem every experience.

David’s response? He takes his eyes off his misery and onto God’s mercy. He injects truth into his soul and he worships. Sometimes there won’t be a pastor or a Christian friend around to bear your soul to, but that’s ok. God is there; encourage yourself in Him.
