Awesome God // Wednesday, September 3

Posted: Wednesday, September 3

One Year Bible Reading Guide:

Ecclesiastes 4:1-6:12
2 Corinthians 6:14-7:7
Psalm 47:1-9
Proverbs 22:16

Verse of the day:

Talk is cheap, like daydreams and other useless activities. Fear God instead. (Ecclesiastes 5:7)

Someone once said that you need to be 40 years old before you read Ecclesiastes. Why? Because if you don’t understand the mind-set of an aged King Solomon, the writer, you won’t understand the message he’s sharing.

Solomon was a guy who had it all. Every option in life was at his fingertips, waiting to be seized, and that even includes his relationship with God. He had access to the temple, access to the Scriptures, access to worship, and on and on we could go. Over his lifetime, I’d bet Solomon had broken promises to God, heaped up files full of daydreams, and wasted crazy amounts of time and energy on meaningless accomplishments. So as he creeps towards the end of his life he looks back and says, a more important pursuit, a more valuable use of time, the strongest motivator to a life well lived comes from having a healthy fear of God.

Our God is awesome – not in a California surfer kind of way. Instead, He is holy, overwhelming, and astounding. He is all-powerful, all-knowing, and ever-present. To begin to see God as He truly is, is to begin to fear God. To understand Him and the depths of His great love for you and for the world is how our hearts, minds, and souls are captured by His grace and propelled to action. Too often we can say, dream, or do things for Him, believing that this is what pleases God. King Solomon simply says, “Fear God instead.”

Make it your aim to know God; to discover who He is and how the Bible describes Him. He is truly awesome.
