The Voice That Stirs Emotion // Thursday, August 14

Posted: Thursday, August 14

One Year Bible Reading Guide:

Nehemiah 7:73-9:21
1 Corinthians 9:1-18
Psalm 33:12-22
Proverbs 21:11-12

Verse of the day:

Then Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who were interpreting for the people said to them, “Don’t mourn or weep on such a day as this! For today is a sacred day before the Lord your God.” For the people had all been weeping as they listened to the words of the Law. (Nehemiah 8:9)

Have you ever been so enlivened and filled with emotion that all you could do is cry? Maybe it was when your child was born, or when you graduated, or bought your first home. For me, it was when I first saw my bride on our wedding day, a moment I’ll never forget. We waited until the ceremony to see each other and I had been kept in the dark about her dress, makeup, hair, the whole deal! So when she came to the doors and I saw her for the first time in that beautiful white dress ready to make the promise to be together til the day we died, I lost it. I had this rush of raw emotions - happy, wowed, nervous, excited, scared, reverent - so much jam packed in that instant! It was such an appreciable moment that all I could do was cry.

The people in Nehemiah 8 felt the same way. Once the people heard the laws of God and were realizing the seriousness of the matter they began to break down. While it doesn’t say exactly why the people were crying, I imagine it was because 1.) their eyes were opened to how many laws they had disobeyed and were heartbroken about their sin and 2.) the laws of God are made for our benefit and communicate that God loves us so incredibly much. I can picture families huddled together embracing and crying because of the swarm of emotions. It was a bonding and memorable experience for everyone present that day. God’s word had penetrated their hearts and souls so much that they could do nothing but cry. Nehemiah examined the situation and reassured them, this is a GOOD moment! This is a time to celebrate because God’s word is marvelous! God has spoken to his people and revealed his truth!

God wants to have a moment with you today. He wants to speak something directly to you meant for you. Will you take the time today to hear his voice? Many times after God speaks to me I feel this raw emotion - joy, humbleness, wonder - because the God who created the universe and rules and reigns over everything spoke to me. Our God is great, listen to his voice today!
