God v Idols // Wednesday, September 24

Posted: Wednesday, September 24

One Year Bible Reading Guide:

Isaiah 43:14-45:10
Ephesians 3:1-21
Psalm 68:1-18
Proverbs 24:1-2

Verse of the day:

This is what the Lord says— Israel’s King and Redeemer, the Lord Almighty: “I am the first and I am the last; apart from me there is no God.” (Isaiah 44:6)

In the New International Version Isaiah 44:6-23 is titled, “The Lord, Not Idols”.  In verse 6 God says “I am the first and last”.  God is eternal.  In verse 7 God challenges false gods to tell Him the past and future, declaring that he is all-knowing or omniscient.  And borrowing from the next section, God says in verse 24, “I am the Lord, who has made all things, who alone stretched out the heavens, who spread out the earth by myself.”  This speaks of God’s omnipotence (all-powerful) and that He is Creator of all things”.   God is the eternal, omniscient, omnipotent Creator of all things.

Concerning idols, verse 9 says they are worthless and verse 10 says they profit men nothing.  Verses 10 and 11 say idols are made by mere men.  Idols are but lumps of metal and blocks of wood (v.19) hammered and chiseled out by human hands.  “The Lord, not idols”, is the obvious choice.

Before we write off the idea of worshipping idols as not applying to us, we should examine our hearts.   Ask yourself, is there anything or anyone that I’ve put in the place of God in my life.  We have such an awesome God. Why would we want to put anything or anyone in His place?  There is no comparison of God and idols.  In verse 8 God says, “You are my witnesses.  Is there any God besides me?  No there is no other Rock; I know not one.”  If you need to, dethrone those idols. Put God on or back on the throne of your heart today.  Don’t delay.  He alone is worthy.
