The Hardest Challenge // Tuesday, September 30

Posted: Tuesday, September 30

One Year Bible Reading:

Isaiah 60:1-62:5
Philippians 1:27-2:18
Psalm 72:1-20
Proverbs 24:11-12

Verse of the day:

Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. (Philippians 1:3)

For a people that are growing up in a world of selfies, likes and followers, it is not hard to see why we are so self-absorbed. At no other time in world history does it seem that everything revolves around what we want and our time table. We DVR a show and watch it at our time. We download movies and shows onto our phones or tablets so we can watch them on the go. Many young adults would rather ride in a car than drive, so they can enjoy their media.

It would seem that the people of Philippi were having the same issues in their day. Paul writes to them to make sure they are putting others first. Our natural tendency is to make sure our needs are met first. Oh, we may be very willing to take care of our family or our friends. However, even this is selfishly motivated because of how we feel when we take care of those we love.

Jesus wants to teach us a better way. We are called to serve, not just be served. Today as you go through your scheduled events, make sure you look for ways that you can put others first. Let that car get in front of you. Hold the door for a stranger. Take the time to let another person in line go in front of you. Set your needs aside and take an opportunity to meet the needs of others. Who knows, that could be the door of kindness Jesus is waiting to walk through to enter that person’s life.
