Genesis 41:17-42:17
Matthew 13:24-46
Psalm 18:1-15
Proverbs 4:1-6

Verse of the day:

The Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure a man discovered in a field. In his excitement, he sold everything he owned to get enough money to buy the field—and get the treasure, too! (Matthew 13:44)

Do you have something that is so precious nothing else even compares? Something that in the chance your house caught on fire, that thing would be the first, maybe the only thing you grabbed before escaping? My “thing” is my iPad. It was a combined gift from my then fiancé (now wife) and family for my college graduation. I had wanted one for a long time but as a poor college kid preparing to get married, let’s just say there wasn’t much fun money laying around. I was in shock and utter bliss when I opened my brand new iPad, and I love it!  Whether I’m using it to play Monopoly with my wife, watching a movie while working out, or checking Twitter, it’s definitely my favorite ‘thing.’

Jesus in this portion of Matthew is just pumping out parable after parable, and good ones too! His theme throughout these parables in Matthew 13 all relate to the Kingdom of Heaven. The Kingdom of Heaven is both a literal and symbolic place and will be fully revealed when Jesus returns to rule and reign this Earth. Any time a life is transformed or affected by the power of God the Kingdom of Heaven grows. Any time a church is planted, any time people gather together to worship God and hear from His word, any time a person in need is given water, food, or clothes the Kingdom of Heaven expands.

For those of us who trust and have accepted Jesus’ offer of salvation, we like the man who bought the entire field for the treasure in it, have received a treasure more valuable than anything in this Earthly kingdom. More than iPads, more than football, more than the people around us. Being part of the Kingdom of Heaven is worth giving up everything else for! It means you are accepted into the presence of the almighty God of the universe. And living within His Kingdom is so easy - it’s living with the mindset that we’re citizens of Heaven and making choices that glorify the King Jesus Christ.

If you’re a believer in Jesus, you are a legal citizen of the greatest kingdom in human history. What are some ways you can help build the Kingdom of Heaven? It’s as easy as sharing your story of how Jesus has changed your life, or buying lunch for a coworker, or inviting a friend to come to church with you this week. Reading this devotional and Verse of the Day is building the Kingdom of Heaven because it’s more of God working in your life! I’m so glad I discovered this hidden treasure like the man in the parable!
