Matthew 10:1-23
Psalm 12:1-8
Proverbs 3:13-15

Verse of the day:

I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves. (Matthew 10:16)

Jesus said “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves.”  Well that’s comforting.  Jesus goes on to tell his disciples they will be beaten, put on trial, arrested, betrayed, hated, called names and even killed – persecuted (Matthew 10:17-24).   It didn’t get any better did it?  Jesus was straightforward with these men.  He told them what it was going to be like following Him and preaching His name.  Jesus didn’t promise them a life without troubles.

Here’s where it gets better though.   Jesus did say that the Holy Spirit would give them (us) words to say when they (we) are persecuted (Matthew 10:19-20).  He also said that if they (we) stand “firm to the end, they (we) will be saved (Matthew 10:22).  When trouble and persecution comes, cry out to the Lord like the psalmist David did in Psalms 12:1 where he cried out, “Help, Lord.”  Remember God is with us through trouble and persecution.  He was watching over Jacob when he was being persecuted by Laban (Genesis 31) and He brought him through it.  And He will bring us through too.  It’s true Jesus didn’t promise a life void of trouble and persecution.  Instead, He said, expect it.  He did however promise eternal life to those who stand firm to the end.  “…Be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.” (Matthew 10:16b
