Verse of the day:
Later, Levi invited Jesus and his disciples to his home as dinner guests, along with many tax collectors and other disreputable sinners.” (Mark 2:15)
Levi, the disciple also known as Matthew, was a tax collector before he was a follower of Christ. So it would make sense that Matthew would want to introduce this man that had caused him to want to change his vocation and direction of his life. What better way to celebrate the changing of a job than to throw a party.
Levi was making a drastic change. He was moving from a place of wealth and influence to following around a poor rabbi, with a bunch of ex-fishermen. This decision must not have made much sense to those in Levi’s circle of friends. Instead of having to explain this to everyone, he thought it would be best just to introduce all of his friends to Jesus. By meeting him, He hoped that they would see in Jesus what Levi saw. He was wanting to see life change for his friends also.
Do you have friends who don’t know Jesus? Maybe you should throw a Matthew party. It is easy, just invite your unsaved friends and some very influential Christian friends to your house for a party. Make sure that the Christian friends are confident enough to share Christ, but relational enough to connect with your friends. Who knows, this may be the first party that they walk home without staggering and with a pull in their hearts to know more about this man named Jesus.
