Luke 2:36-52
Psalm 60:1-12
Proverbs 11:15

Verse of the day:

There’s danger in putting up security for a stranger’s debt; it’s safer not to guarantee another person’s debt. (Proverbs 11:15)

Sometimes our good intentions get us into trouble. Solomon here is warning to use wisdom when making decisions in how to get involved with a stranger’s debts.  There are times that we meet people who have tragic stories about how they have wound up in the bad circumstances that they are in. Our heart breaks for what they have gone through and we want to get involved and fix their situation.  It’s wise to use caution though when using your own money to pay the debts of a stranger or to secure housing for someone you don’t know.

There are times when people want to take advantage of a kind- hearted person. We are called to be compassionate, but not called to be a sucker.  When contemplating how to help someone who has a financial need do what you can to check the facts.  Make sure that their story lines up. You don’t need to be an interrogator but use good judgement to determine if financial help is where the real need is or if there is a greater need that needs to be addressed (ex. Finding a job, learning how to budget,  reconciling relationships, addiction, etc.)  Most importantly pray for God to guide you and to give you wisdom. When you are in tune with His voice it makes navigating these scenarios much easier!
