Just Look For Healing
Posted: Saturday, March 14
Verse of the day:
Then the Lord told him, “Make a replica of a poisonous snake and attach it to a pole. All who are bitten will live if they simply look at it!” (Numbers 21:8)
How odd is it that the serpent has become the symbol of healing? On my way to work the other day I passed a new veterinary clinic and they were installing the sign, which included the serpent on the pole. Where did this all begin?
The Israelites were in the midst of a long and difficult journey to the Promised Land. The people complained about everything, including the food that God provided for them on a daily basis. So they were exposed to the snakes, many were bitten, and quite a few died. The people in desperation asked Moses to pray for them. And when Moses prayed he received instruction from God to make a replica of a poisonous snake on a pole, and if people look at it, they would be healed. The snake must have been a powerful reminder of their sin and how sin originally entered the world.
Centuries later, Jesus told Nicodemus, “As Moses lifted up the bronze snake on a pole in the wilderness, so I, the Son of Man, must be lifted up on a pole, so that everyone who believes in me will have eternal life” (John 3:14-15)
Jesus replaces sin and the serpent and if we need healing, whether it be physically, emotionally or spiritually, we need look no further than Jesus!
