Verse of the day:

Smooth words may hide a wicked heart, just as a pretty glaze covers a clay pot.  (Proverbs 26:23)

Have you ever been mesmerized by something beautiful? Have you ever been misled by appearances? Recently, I learned of a person who paid a considerable amount of money to buy a George Ohr pot because of its beautiful glaze. This person believe that it was a great investment.

Sadly, it turns out, the gorgeous glazed pot was worth only a fraction of the price this person paid for it. Why? Well, the potter did not intend for it to be glazed. Then someone came a long and tried to make it “more appealing” and detracted from its value. However, if it had been kept as the potter intended, it would’ve been priceless.

Just like the owner of that glazed pot, we tend to make judgments based on appearances all the time. Yet, appearances can be deceiving. Today, Proverbs 26:23 challenges us to look behind the surface for such character traits as faithfulness, integrity, kindness, humility, patience, perseverance, and compassion. These character traits reflect the way God originally made us. They make us truly beautiful; because our beauty, our dignity, and our worth were given to us by God. Thus, anything other than God’s original intention for us detracts from our God-given beauty.

Take the time this week to look behind the surface in your interactions with others. Also, spend some time and effort to cultivate a beautiful heart.
