Judges 15:1-16:31
John 2:1-25
Psalm 103:1-22
Proverbs 14:17-19

Verse of the day:

The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever; he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. (Psalm 103:8-12)

There are many attributes of God you can find by reading through the books of the Bible.  Merciful is one of them.   This attribute stands out in Psalms 103.  Although we are sinners and deserve the correct punishment for our sins, God is merciful.  He chooses not repay us according to our iniquities.  The correct payment for sin against God is death.  This is actually a spiritual death but we believers are not subject to this punishment because of the work of Jesus Christ on the cross.  He paid the price for our sin so that we may have eternal life.  God spares us of what we deserve, so He is merciful.  He blesses us by giving us eternal life with Him, so He is gracious.

However, we are not completely exempt from all the consequences that sin produces.  Guilt and shame are two consequences that have severe effects.  These two can really strain our relationship with God but He does not want it to be this way.  When we repent and turn to Him, He pardons our sin.  There is no condemnation.

Psalms 103:11-12 states, For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

How far are the heavens from the earth?  How far is the east from the west?  There is no way to measure this because the distance is incalculable.  This is how God decides to describe the distance between us and the sins that we have committed.  The believer and their sins will never meet because the distance is infinite.  Part of the devil’s ministry is condemning people for their past.  God however, chooses to not remember our past.

Psalm 103 is filled with attributes about Him and His promises for us.  The weight of your past is lifted because He separated you from your sin.  You can freely live for Him in obedience today knowing that He is a merciful and gracious God.
