Verse of the day:

He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us. (2 Corinthians 1:4)

Have you ever wondered if there was any benefit to the troubles that you go through in life? Most of us are probably familiar with the verse, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28) However, if you have ever been going through a really difficult time and someone comes and quotes that to you sometimes it doesn’t bring the comfort that it should and instead it just makes you want to push them into a puddle of mud!  We often wonder in those times how God could bring anything good from the pain and that we are experiencing?

When I was a senior in college I began to struggle with bouts of depression and anxiety. Not the kind of anxiety that you get before stepping out in front of a crowd or when you see a giant spider in your house and you are the only one there to kill it—the kind of anxiety where you wake up every morning with your heart racing, body tense, and your mind full of fear and dread trying to find figure out where the source of this could be coming from.  It was a miserable time for me and as the months went on the more intense it became for me.  During that time I wondered if this would be my daily struggle for the rest of my life.  How could any good come from what I was experiencing?

Good did come from that time of darkness and pain though. As time went on God began to lay out a path of healing and restoration for me. He comforted me and led me through to “green pastures and quiet waters” (Psalm 23:2). He set me free from what many feel they will be trapped forever by. Because I have experienced His comfort I know can speak hope and life into those who are going through similar struggles. I can encourage them that with God this does not need to be their daily struggle anymore.  Each time I share with someone who is struggling with depression and anxiety my experience and how God gave me freedom I begin to see hope come to their eyes! I now thank God for allowing me to go through that trial to experience His comfort and be able to pass that along to others!

What is trial that you are going through that you don’t see any hope for any good to come from? Allow God to come in and comfort you through the pain. Don’t push Him away but draw close to Him through spending more time in the Word and in prayer. He will bring you through and will use your experience to bring comfort and hope to others!
