One Year Bible Reading Guide:

Isaiah 33:10-36:22
Galatians 5:13-26
Psalm 64:1-10
Proverbs 23:23

Verse of the day:

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.  Galatians 5:22-23

My wife usually keeps us well stocked with fruit at our house.  I could go home right now and have an apple, orange, watermelon, cantaloupe, grapes or a peach except that I don’t like peaches.  I’m good with all the others though.  My wife tells me that we are getting low on grapes but we do have half a watermelon left.  Not for long. I really like watermelon.  She says there are some fruit cups in the fridge.  Also we are low on apples and oranges and our daughter ate most of the peaches.  You go girl!  So that is the fruit inventory at our house.

Galatians 5:16 says to “walk in the Spirit”.  Galatians 5:25 says “Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.” (NIV)  In other versions it says “walk in the Spirit.”  Well how do we know we’re walking in the Spirit? – One way is by taking spiritual fruit inventory.  Look at the 9 fruit of the Spirit found in Galatians 5:22-23 as gauges.  Honestly ask yourself and the Lord how you are doing in each one.  What does the joy gauge say?  What does the kindness gauge say? What does the self-control gauge say? You get the idea.  I did this as I was putting this devotion together and the Holy Spirit pointed out some spiritual fruit gauges that were currently running low in my life.  Ouch!  I think we can all admit there are times when a spiritual fruit gauge was low and we didn’t handle a situation in the best way or treat a person quite the way we should have.

So how do we get our gauges to show higher levels of the fruit of the Spirit in our lives?  We do so by drawing closer to Christ who is the ultimate example of walking in the Spirit and having the fruit of the Spirit evident in His life.  Let the Holy Spirit lead you and those gauges will rise, let the flesh get in the way and those gauges will go down.  There are laws against the gauge in your car saying 90 mph but there is no law against your spiritual fruit gauges saying full.  So go ahead live life with all gauges on full making adjustments when you need to, walking in the Spirit.  “But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!” Galatians 5:22-23 (NASB) Now for that watermelon. Self-control, self-control….
