Kind words are like honey— sweet to the soul and healthy for the body. (Proverbs 16:24)
Words are powerful. A negative or rude word from someone has the power to really ruin our day. On a warm day where I wore shorts to school in fourth grade a boy in my class whispered to me “My grandma has better legs than you do!” His comment really bummed me out. I didn’t know that this was something that I should be self-conscious about but thanks to him bringing it to my attention- I became self-conscience! I’m sure that boy never thought about what he said to me after that day but all these years later I can still recall his careless, negative words.
How often have we said something in passing that was rude that we have forgotten about but has really caused hurt in the life of someone else? Sometimes we justify our rudeness because of our own circumstances: “I didn’t sleep well,” “I’m just not having a good day” “I don’t feel well”. Whatever our circumstances are there is no excuse for being rude or negative toward someone else.
Instead of offering bitter words we have the opportunity with each word that we save to give kind words that the Bible describes as being sweet and beneficial like honey. Kind words are powerful too! They have the power to lift someone’s day and bring hope and encouragement. So I challenge you today to do what TobyMac says in his song “Speak Life”: “So speak Life, speak Life. To the deadest darkest night. Speak life, speak Life. When the sun won’t shine and you don’t know why. Look into the eyes of the brokenhearted; Watch them come alive as soon as you speak hope, You speak love, you speak...You speak Life,(oh oh oh oh oh oh) You speak Life. (oh oh oh oh oh oh)”
You have the power to make a difference today just with the words you choose- so choose wisely!
