Verse of the day:

In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety. (Psalm 4:8 NIV)

A time of day that we’d like to be peaceful can often be the quite stressful.  Many of us struggle to fall asleep when our head hits the pillow.

Instead of winding down, our mind ramps up.  We think about all that needs to be done tomorrow.  We worry about all that didn’t get done today.  There’s anxiety about our health, family and responsibilities.  Sometimes, great visions for our future pop into our heads.  Regrets from our past can also surface at bedtime.

A recent study found that as many as 40% of Americans suffer from some degree of insomnia with fear being the top cause.

Medical experts say going to bed at the same time each night, cutting out caffeine in the hours before bedtime and not swiping through your phone when you’re tucked in can all help.  But, how about prayer?

Ending your day in prayer is a great way to reset your mind on what’s most important.  Psalm 4 offers us a model.

In peace I will lie down and sleep,
    for you alone, Lord,
    make me dwell in safety.

(Psalm 4:8 NIV)

Ask your Heavenly Father to give you peace as you lie down to sleep.  Tell God about any specific things that are weighing on your mind.  In your words, express to the Lord that you find comfort knowing that He is aware of your situations and that He is in control.
