2 Chronicles 30:1-31:21
Verse of the day:
Good and upright is the Lord; therefore he instructs sinners in his ways. (Psalm 25:8)
Jimmy received his driving permit a few weeks prior to the day his parents took him to the nearby golf course. When they were ready to go home, Jimmy’s parents allowed him to drive back by himself. He was extremely excited and somewhat nervous. He did fairly well on the road (for a new driver!). Yet, things got decidedly more complicated once he arrived to the house. He had to park in the garage in a tight squeeze between two other cars. As the car started inching forward, he got so excited that he pushed the gas pedal (instead of the brake) and crashed into his brother’s room!
Once his parents calmed down, they told him: “… no matter what mistakes you make in life, and you will make plenty, we will always love you no matter what!” However, they knew that by itself is incomplete. So, they held him accountable by making him spend the weekend repairing the damage he had caused. They knew that in order to truly love him, they had to also be consistent to discipline and to correct him.
Since they reassured him of their unconditional love, they made it easier for him to seek their advice when he made mistakes in the future. You see, the power of discipline can only be harnessed when driven by unconditional love.
God does with us exactly the same. He loves us unconditionally. Yet, in order to truly love us, He has to discipline and correct us if we go astray. God’s reassurance of His love for us allows us to freely seek His advice when we make mistakes. After all, we know He has our best interest at heart! May we be able to experience the full measure of the love of God!
