The word “finally” lets us know that Paul is about to close his letter to the church at Ephesus and that he has some final words to say. We know that final words are important words. The final words of instruction from parents to their kids or a babysitter before going out are important words. The final words of our loved ones before leaving this world are important words. The final words of Jesus before His ascension are important words. Let’s take a look at Paul’s final words by looking at the word “all” or synonyms for “all”.
First, Paul says “Put on the full armor of God” (Ephesians 6:11-17 NIV). Some versions use the word “all” for “full”. Paul tells us in order to “be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power”, we need to “put on all the armor of God”. In fact he says it twice and then a third time when he lists each one individually and tells us to put them on. If you’re going to be strong, you gotta wear ALL the armor. Do you know them by heart? – Belt of Truth, Breastplate of Righteousness, Shoes of the Readiness of the Gospel of Peace, Shield of Faith, Helmet of Salvation and the Sword of the Spirit (the Word of God). Put on all the armor of God….” (Ephesians 6:11-13 NLT). Wear them.
Secondly, Paul tells us in order to “be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power”, we need to “extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one” (Ephesians 6:16). If you’re going to be strong, you gotta extinguish ALL the enemy’s arrows. Do whatever you got to do to put those arrows out – repent like David, run like Joseph, resist like Daniel. Do it! Don’t let the enemy take any ground. Use the Shield of Faith and the Sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God.
Thirdly, Paul tells us in order to “be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power”, we need to pray. “And pray in the Spirit on ALL occasions with ALL kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for ALL the Lord’s people.” (Ephesians 6:18 NIV)) I also could have spelled “alert”, A-L-L-e-r-t and “always”, A-L-L-w-a-y-s. If you’re going to be strong, you gotta pray. Here are some of the words to Steven Curtis Chapman’s song, “Let Us Pray”.
“Let us pray, let us pray, everywhere in every way
Every moment of the day, it is the right time
Let us pray without end and when we finish start again
Like breathing out and breathing in, let us pray.”
