Ezra 8:21-9:15
1 Corinthians 5:1-13
Psalm 31:1-8
Proverbs 21:1-2

Verse of the day:

Turn your ear to me, come quickly to my rescue; be my rock of refuge, a strong fortress to save me. (Psalm 31:2)

Ezra is going back to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple.  In Ezra 8:21 he proclaims a fast so they could pray for a safe journey.  A smart move considering there would be no army with them, they would be traveling hundreds of miles for months and they had a lot of gold and silver they were taking with them.  It has been estimated that the trip was 900 to 1,000 miles and the gold and silver was around 60 million dollars.  Ezra knew that between Babylon and Jerusalem there were many robbers and bandits.  So, you can see why Ezra was concerned, but he trusted in his God and God helped them make it safely to Jerusalem.

God was with Ezra and God has been with us.  Can you think of a time or times God was with you and kept you safe from harm.  I know there are a lot of great stories out there of God’s faithfulness in keeping us safe.  Here’s a few of mine. I was playing at my grandpa’s farm when I was four when a stray bullet from a hunter’s gun came out of the woods and struck me in the side.  Praise the Lord, the bullet only went through my baby fat.  I was around 10 riding to church with my mom on a snowy day when the car hit a patch of ice and went sliding out of control.  We were heading for an embankment but after one word spoken by mom the car turned and headed to the ditch on the other side of the road.  That word was Jesus! Praise the Lord!  I was a teenager working outside at my place of employment when the wind blew open a roof top door breaking the glass window and sending broken glass down on me.  Praise the Lord, I only had a few cuts on my arms requiring stitches.  When I worked a summer college job in a mine, I lost my balance and almost fell down a deep hole.  The yells of a co-worker startled me and I regained my balance and backed away from the hole.  Praise the Lord!  My wife and I were heading to church when a gust of wind tried to blow us off the road.  We learned later that that gust of wind was a tornado north of us going east when we were going west.  Praise the Lord!  Last year around this time I went to the emergency room with severe stomach pain.  After a second visit to the emergency room, it was found that my gallbladder needed to come out.  The surgeon told my wife my gallbladder was diseased and disintegrating and if they hadn’t caught it when they did, I only had two days to live.  Praise the Lord for His protection!

We pray for God’s protection at our house every day and I encourage you to do the same.  Cover your loved ones in prayer.  God is faithful. Think back of all the times God’s hand of protection was evident on your life and praise and thank Him for it.  Then there are times God kept us safe and we didn’t even know we were in harm’s way.  Praise and thank Him for those times too.  Thank You God for all the times you kept me and my family and friends safe!   God bless!
