One Year Bible Reading Guide:

2 Samuel 13:1-39
John 17:1-26
Psalm 119:81-96
Proverbs 16:6-7

Verse of the day:

“But Amnon had a very crafty friend—his cousin Jonadab. He was the son of David’s brother Shimea.” (2 Samuel 13: 3)

This entire chapter of 2 Samuel is so sad. There are so many tragic events that take place within this story and within this family. Reading through it I wonder how it would have been different if Jonadab would have given different advice. Would Tamar still have been raped by her half-brother and thus setting in motion a story where brother kills brother and son is divided from his father? So much of the tragedy and brokenness that takes place in this story hinges on bad advice that was listened to.

The advice we give is extremely important. We must always make sure that what we are telling people lines up with God’s Word. It is easy to form an opinion of what someone should do but by sharing that without being in line with God’s Word you have the ability to negatively influence the path that their life takes. If Jonadab would have known that the advice he was giving was going to ultimately lead to Amnon’s murder he probably would have chosen to not give it.

Amnon was ultimately responsible for his actions but his story serves as such a great reminder of how important our words of advice are and how important it is to have Godly people that we are receiving advice from.
