Verse of the day:

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever. (Psalm 136:1)

Our thanks arises from the very nature of God and His glory and goodness. The steadfast reason we give Him thanks is because God is good and his love is inexhaustible, beyond decay, and never ending.

Let’s remember who we are thanking here. We often make God small in our minds. The first several verses remind us that the Lord loves eternally. He is God of all and Lord of Lords. He is matchless and above everything. He is the one with all power and authority. And if that is not enough, then add to the list—He’s good! We often say, “God is good all the time—and all the time God is good!

Mercy or lovingkindness is what we have received from God and what He expects us to extend to others. Here is a great story that relates to this principle. A believer who is an attorney, after meditating on several scriptures concerning mercy, decided to cancel the debts of all his clients that had owed him money for more than six months. He drafted a letter explaining his decision and its biblical basis, and sent seventeen debt canceling letters via certified mail. One by one, the letters began to return, unsigned and undelivered. Sixteen of the seventeen letters came back to him because the clients refused to sign for and open the envelopes, fearing that this attorney was suing them for their debts. What a picture of most people’s reaction to God’s letter of forgiveness and mercy. We owe a debt for our sin and God is willing to cancel it, but too many people are unwilling to open the letter that explains how.

So let’s remember, we can give thanks to God because He is good. His nature is goodness. It’s not like He’s good the way love is good, or helping someone out is good—the very essence of who He is…is good. And His steadfast, loyal love endures forever. The Hebrew word for steadfast love is difficult to translate. Some translations include lovingkindness, loyal love, faithful love, gracious love, and mercy.

I prefer to think this way—God loves us with a Never Stopping, Never Giving up, Unbreakable, Always and Forever Love. I think we can all say Amen to that!
