One Year Bible Reading Guide:

Exodus 21:22-23:13
Matthew 24:1-28
Psalm 29:1-11
Proverbs 7:6-23

Verse of the day:

Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold,  but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved. (Matthew 24:12-13)

In Matthew chapter 24, verses 1 and 2 Jesus tells His disciples of the coming destruction of the temple saying, “Not one stone here will be left on another, every one will be thrown down”.  A little later the disciples ask Jesus when all this would happen. Verse 3 says, “As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. “Tell us,” they said, “when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?”’

The first thing Jesus tells them is there will be false Christs. (24:4-5) Later in the chapter Jesus again says there will be false Christs, but this time He adds false prophets as well.  He says these false Christs and prophets will perform great signs and miracles in order to deceive. (24:11, 23-25)  To this Jesus says “Watch out that no one deceives you.” (24:4)

The second thing Jesus tells them is there will be calamity.  Verse 6 says there will be “wars and rumors of wars”.  Verse 7 says “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places.”  To this Jesus says, “See to it that you are not alarmed”. (24:6)

The third thing Jesus tells them is there will be persecution and that “many will turn away from the faith”.  He says there will be betrayal, hate and an increase of wickedness. He then says that “the love of most will grow cold” because of it. (24:9-12)   Do not be part of the “many” or the “most”.  Jesus says, “He who stands firm to the end will be saved”. (24:13)

We see the end times signs around us.  Jesus told his disciples and us to be prepared.  He says watch out, don’t let anyone deceive you.  He says don’t be alarmed when these things happen.  He says stand firm. “Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.” Matthew 24:12-13 (NIV)
