Led Astray By Drink

Drunk driving.  Bar fights.  One-night stands.  Alcohol-fueled domestic violence.

These are decisions made under the influence of alcohol that are filled with regret the next day.  These choices hurt the person who has been drinking and, too often, other people.

A factor in all of this is that a person who has been drinking must make a wise choice while their judgment is severely impaired.

In my drinking days prior to giving my life to Christ,  I said and did things under the influence that I never would have done sober (sorry, not discussing the details).

Alcohol is deceiving.  It promises relaxation, fun, escape, laughter, celebration and friendship. Yet, many find themselves living with guilt, brokenness, heartache and heartbreak because of decisions made while intoxicated.  Those consequences never seem to make it into the commercials.

Proverbs 20:1 addresses this, "Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise" (NIV).

The proverb says that wine "mocks" - meaning it causes a person to be foolish or disrespectful.  And "brawls" - think of the verbal and physical fights brought on by alcohol.

Yes, there are theological arguments that hold the position that drinking in moderation is acceptable for a Christian.  So, I will just speak from personal experience.

The decision to quit alcohol completely is one of the best I've ever made.

When you don't drink at all, there's no chance of drinking too much.  If you don't invite alcohol in, there's no chance it will lead you astray.
