Like An Athlete

Have you ever seen the Olympic Games on TV? I love to watch them! The best part of the Olympic Games is watching some of the finest athletes in the world compete and sometimes win. When an athlete wins, he or she stands on a podium and receives a medal while their national anthem is playing. However, it’s not all fun and games. When an athlete violates the rules set by the International Olympic Committee, they have to give up their medals. In other words, if they cheat, they don’t get to win. The same principle applies to our walk with the Lord!
In 2 Timothy 2:5, the Apostle Paul compares the athlete’s life with your walk with the Lord. An athlete must compete within the rules and disciplines of their sport and you must do the same. Why? Because Jesus wants you to win in life and only those who follow the rules win.
You may think that rules are restricting. You may see them as something to do because you don’t have a choice (much like paying your taxes!). Yet, according to the Bible, Jesus wants you to obey the rules not to torture you but to bless you. Obedience brings blessing!
