One Year Bible Reading Guide:

Judges 21:1-Ruth 1:22
John 4:4-42
Psalm 105:1-15
Proverbs 14:25

Verse of the Day:

“Hannah was in deep anguish, crying bitterly as she prayed to the Lord. And she made this vow: “O Lord of Heaven’s Armies, if you will look upon my sorrow and answer my prayer and give me a son, then I will give him back to you. (1 Samuel 1:10-11a NLT)

I am sure all of us have prayed out of a deep desire for God to do a miracle in our lives or our families. We may have even be audacious enough to make a vow to God. We promise to give him part of our blessing if God will just give us what we are asking for.

Today we find Hannah, the soon to be mother of Samuel, in that same place. Tired of being branded as barren, she pleads for life to grow inside of her. To show her depth of desire she makes a pretty over the top vow. If God would give her a son, she would give the child to God. When she has a son, she does exactly what she has vowed. The text does not give us any indication that she thought about going back on her word, which I find fascinating.

This coming Sunday we will celebrate Mother’s day. Hannah serves as an example for those that are desperate for a miracle. Maybe you have a lost child. Maybe you have a disease or medical condition. Maybe a loved one’s life is hanging in the balance. Be encouraged today to know that God hears us when we pray. Be warned today, that God hears us when we pray. If you ask for a miracle, believe that your heavenly father will give it. If you make a vow, beware that God may hold you to it.

Take a few moments today to examine your heart and mind. Have you made a vow or promise to God and did not follow through? Is there something you need to do to make it right? Examine yourself and do what you need to do to walk in favor with God.
