One Year Bible Reading Guide:

1 Kings 9:1-10:29
Acts 8:14-40
Psalm 130:1-8
Proverbs 17:2-3

Verse of the Day:

When Simon saw that the Spirit was given when the apostles laid their hands on people, he offered them money to buy this power. “Let me have this power, too,” he exclaimed, “so that when I lay my hands on people, they will receive the Holy Spirit!” (Acts 8:18-19)

I have a collection of toys called Funko Pops. They’re bobbleheads with square shaped heads that have been made for just about every pop culture character you could think of from movies, to sports, to video games. You can get them almost anywhere, so when I’m browsing and see a rare one that I’ve never seen anywhere else, strangely I have a deep desire to snatch it up! Why? Because it’s something special that will set my collection apart!

In today’s One Year Bible Reading, we encounter a man named Simon who was up to all sorts of no good. He is described as a sorcerer who would amaze people with his party tricks. When He saw the very real, raw power of the Holy Spirit and how it was drastically changing lives he wanted that! So much so that he was willing to pay Peter and John to know how he could have that same power.

Simon didn’t want the power of the Holy Spirit to grow closer to who God created him to be, but for selfish motivations. Peter rebuked Simon and rightfully so, but the interesting human characteristic is that Simon wanted the Holy Spirit because it was something new and something different.

That’s an incredible avenue to show people God’s power. People crave new and exciting, the Holy Spirit is completely new and exciting! When we live our lives so that the Holy Spirit is alive and active through our choices and spiritual gifts, we can open up the door for people to be curious. We can lead people closer to Jesus by living the way Jesus intended for us to live! It doesn’t have to be scary or weird, this is supposed to be normal! Ask the Holy Spirit to lead and guide your life today so that others will be drawn to the Holy Spirit’s power!
