One Year Bible Reading Guide:

Ezekiel 45:13-46:24
1 Peter 1:13-2:10
Psalm 119:33-48
Proverbs 28:11

Verse of the day:

Turn my eyes from worthless things, and give me life through your word (Psalm 119:37)

Jennifer and I like to put our little girls to bed and then decompress with a sitcom or two after a busy day. However, there is usually studying to be done or few more chores to be completed around the house, so this cherished time together on the couch with Netflix happens about once a week. Unfortunately, our time with television will eat away giant, precious chunks of our time if gone unchecked. Our smart phones and tablets can be just as guilty of sucking away untold hours that would be better invested elsewhere.

There certainly was not today's technology when an unknown author wrote what we know as Psalm 119. Yet, the words remain true. "Turn my eyes from worthless things, and give me life through your word" is the psalmist's prayer in verse 39. While I'm certainly not advocating for unplugged life, I know a regular prayer like this is valuable in helping us prioritize our time.

Lord, reveal to us what is worthless in Your eyes. Help us to turn away or turn off what is distracting us from our relationship with You. Remind us of the power and wisdom that uniquely comes from reading Your Word. Give us Your eyes for our culture and other people. May we invest more time on our knees in prayer than swiping through social media feeds.
