1 Samuel 8:1-9:27 John 6:22-42 Psalm 106:32-48 Proverbs 14:34-35
Verse of the day:
Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, you want to be with me because I fed you, not because you understood the miraculous signs.” (John 6:26)
It’s the morning after Jesus preformed the miracle of the feeding of the five thousand. The people awake to find that both the disciples and Jesus are no longer with them and so they set out to find them on the other side of the lake. When they find them they begin asking Jesus questions about when He arrived on the other side of the lake because they knew He had not gone with the disciples who had taken the only available boat. Instead of answering their seemingly innocent question Jesus replies by calling them out on their true motivation for following Him. They liked the benefits of being around Jesus, (He fed them, entertained them, performed miracles, represented a possible change in government) but they failed to see Him for who He really was- the Son of God who could lead them to eternal life.
Jesus was making it clear to them that He wasn’t just a good man who showed up on the scene to grant their wishes & desires. He had come to bring freedom and pay the penalty for their sin so that they could be in a right & personal relationship with God. Have you ever found yourself being guilty of seeking what God could do for you more than seeking relationship with Him? For myself, I can tell when I am getting off track in what I am seeking when my prayer time becomes all about “Lord please do …. Lord please help me…. Lord please provide….” We are to bring our needs before Him but that shouldn’t be the only time that we go to Him in prayer. We don’t serve God for what He can do for us we serve Him because of who He is.
Take some time today to really seek a deeper relationship with God over seeking Him primarily for help with your needs.
