One Year Bible Reading Guide:

2 Kings 8:1-9:13
Acts 16:16-40
Psalm 143:1-12
Proverbs 17:26

Verse of the day:

For the glory of your name, O Lord, preserve my life.  Because of your faithfulness, bring me out of this distress. (Psalm 143:11)

In Acts 16:16-40 we read one of the exciting adventures of Paul and Silas – the story of Paul and Silas in Prison.   At about midnight they were praying and singing hymns when there was a violent earthquake that shook the prison, opened the doors and loosed the prisoners’ chains. (Vv. 25-26) Paul and Silas were set free from prison, but who else was set free?

In our story today it was not just the prisoners who were set free.  To see who else was set free, you have to go to the beginning of our story.  There was a demon possessed slave girl who made her masters a lot of money by fortune-telling.  For many days she taunted and disrupted the ministry of Paul and Silas.  Finally, Paul casts the demon out of her in the name of Jesus.  Upon realizing they could no longer make money through her, her masters had Paul and Silas arrested. (Vv. 16-24)  The slave girl was set free from demons but who else was set free?

In our story today it was not just Paul and Silas and the girl who were set free.  To find out who else was set free, you have to go to the end of our story.  When the jailer saw that the prison doors were open, he drew his sword to kill himself.   But, Paul yelled out, “We’re all still here”.  The jailer rushed in and asked Paul and Silas “What must I do to be saved?”  To that they replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved.”  The jailer had come to believe in God.  (Vv. 27-34) The jailer was set free from sin and not only him, but his whole family.

Paul and Silas were preaching the name of Jesus and were set free.  The evil spirit was cast out in the name of Jesus and the girl was set free.  The jailer and his family believed in the name of Jesus and were set free.  What is the common denominator in each of these?  It is the name of Jesus that made the difference.  There is power in the name of Jesus.  If you are held bondage by something (sin, addictions, etc.), call out the name of Jesus today and put your trust in Him.  Be set free in the name of Jesus for His is “the name above every name” (Philippians 2:9) and “He whom the Son sets free is free indeed.”  (John 8:36)
