Psalm 112:1-10
Proverbs 27:17

Verse of the day:

As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend. (Proverbs 27:17)

I'm writing this devotion after spending the day talking with pastors from all over the country about what God is doing in their churches and cities. I feel stretched and encouraged... I feel sharpened.

Christians through fellowship and the exchange of ideas increase their effectiveness and improve their walk with Christ. Unfortunately sin causes us to run away from other believers when we need the sharpening the most. The absence of this kind of relationship with other Christians will eventually cause us to be dull. There are reasons the Bible puts such an emphasis on believers having the right kind of fellowship. We need each other.

We need to confess our sins to one another so we can be uplifted in love and grace. Set struggle is real and common. Staying in fellowship sharpens us in our resistance to sin. I need this; we all do.

A quick word of clarification: Just spending time together as Christians will not necessarily produce the improved character that this verse speaks of. We need the kind of fellowship that includes discussion about our spiritual journey and opportunities to share with friends what Christ is doing in our lives. As Christians we don't just hang out, we sharpen each other.
