Hebrews 13:1-25
Psalm 115:1-18
Proverbs 27:21-22

Verse of the day:

Fire tests the purity of silver and gold, but a person is tested by being praised. (Proverbs 27:21)

Do you know the attribute that God loves the most in people? I don’t know for 100%, but as I look through scripture I’m pretty confident that it’s humility. It’s the attitude of making others greater than oneself. It’s realizing the frailty of life and that our time in this world is temporal. Though man has accomplished great feats, it pales in comparison to an omnipotence of God.

God says that he gives grace to the humble. He says that the reward for humility and the fear of God is riches, honor, and life. If you want to be wise, God advises that you humble yourself first. So what’s the greatest test on the state of our humble heart? It’s what we say and do when others praise us.

Praise is fun and comforting, but it shows where our heart is. When people tell us that we’re doing a good job, do we shower in the compliment or pass the acclaim towards others? How we respond to praise sheds light on the condition of our heart. If we want to be humble people, recognizing that its more about elevating others than elevating ourselves is the start. It can be difficult, it’s definitely unnatural, but it’s the best and most rewarding way to live. The next time you’re praised, remember that it’s a test of the heart and God loves a humble person.
