One Year Bible Reading Guide:

Hosea 1:1-3:5
1 John 5:1-21
Psalm 124:1-8
Proverbs 29:5-8

Verse of the day:

When the Lord first began speaking to Israel through Hosea, he said to him, “Go and marry a prostitute, so that some of her children will be conceived in prostitution. This will illustrate how Israel has acted like a prostitute by turning against the Lord and worshiping other gods.” (Hosea 1:2)

The story of Hosea is one of the most bizarre and gut checking stories in the Bible. I still consider myself a newlywed (we’ve been married just over 2 years) and when I put my myself in Hosea’s sandals it makes me sick. If you don’t know the story, make sure you check out today’s 2 chapter reading in the book of Hosea because it presents a definite eye opener to the way God views His relationship with us.

Sadly, some of you have experienced the same sort of treatment Hosea received from his wife Gomer. You’ve been betrayed, belittled, and beyond hurt because of your spouse’s actions. It’s the worst! The pain is insurmountable. It breaks my heart to hear of marriages and families destroyed because of bad choices. That overwhelming damage of an unfaithful spouse is the comparable way God feels when we betray Him.

In many ways, God likens his relationship with us as to a marriage. He is the faithful groom constantly and tirelessly pursuing us, His bride. Are we as faithful to Him as He is to us? Does our love and desire for God emulate the passion He has for us? Or are we like Gomer, shifting through various others to fulfill our pleasures? It’s a challenging reminder to stay faithful to God at all costs. Fight sin, keep far far from it. God, the groom, is here for us.
