He did evil in the eyes of the Lord, just as his father had done. (2 Kings 24:9)
Have you ever watched a kid (possibly your kid) do something and wonder where they got that and realized they got that from you. Moms and dads are good at pointing at each other and saying “Yeah, they got that from you.” And to make matters worse, what kids see you do, they tend to do in excess. Take burping for instance. You burp once and now your kid feels the need to practice their burping skills regularly and not always at home.
In our Old Testament reading today in 2 Kings 23:31-25:20 we find our Verse of the Day and three others like it. Your homework is to find those other three in today’s reading. Each one of them says that a young king followed in the footsteps of their father or ancestors and did evil in the sight of God. First and Second Kings are full of many other such verses. When you see these verses don’t let them be just historical facts but warnings and reminders to be godly examples for your kids to follow. Don’t let your guard down, they’re watching.
Live in such a way that you can say like Paul, “Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me--put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.” (Philippians 4:9) Paul also said “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.” (1 Corinthians 11:1) Be the godly example your kids and the generations after you need you to be because there is no shortage of the other kind.
