One Year Bible Reading Guide:

Deuteronomy 9:1-10:22
Luke 8:4-21
Psalm 69:19-36
Proverbs 12:2-3

Verse of the day:

No one lights a lamp and then covers it with a bowl or hides it under a bed. A lamp is placed on a stand, where its light can be seen by all who enter the house. (Luke 8:16)

Have you ever had the power go out during a storm? It can be kind of fun if you are prepared with candles, lighters, games and snacks! When you lit the candles did you ever put a bowl over them or put them under your mattress for safe keeping? No! Of course not! For one a candle’s function is completely useless when it is hidden under a bowl or mattress and secondly your bed would be destroyed within a matter of seconds. A candle is most useful in complete darkness when it is placed in a prominent place with nothing hiding it.

The same is true for us- when we have Christ in our hearts we become like bright candles in this pitch dark world shining His light. There are times though that we are tempted to hide our precious light from the dark world around us. We are afraid that our light will offend them or that we will be rejected because of it. Do your co-workers and neighbors know that you are a Christian? Or have you hidden your light from them? Does the server at the restaurant know that you have a light inside of you? Or do you hide it with a silent, open-eyed prayer of thanks?

Our light is completely useless when we hide it.  When a candle is hidden under a bowl and cut off from the outside world the light goes out. The same thing happens when we hide our light- it fades and eventually goes out.  We will face rejection and hardship because of our light. We are guaranteed that, but the dark world around us needs us to shine brightly. How else will they be pointed to the truth if all of us hide our light? Today for a lot of us is the first day of a new work week, if you have hidden your light from your co-workers you have a fresh start to change that this week. What can you do today to shine brightly?
