One Year Bible Reading Guide:

Nehemiah 12:27-13:31
1 Corinthians 11:1-16
Psalm 35:1-16
Proverbs 21:17-18

Verse of the day:

Those who love pleasure become poor; those who love wine and luxury will never be rich. (Proverbs 21:17)

Who wouldn’t like to have more money in their bank account? I think we all would! We all have a list of things we probably day dream about that we would like to do if we had more money. I like to day dream that I would go on more vacations, get my nails done more than once a year, buy more clothes—you know all things that are really important and beneficial! Our desires for these pleasures can lead us down a path to debt & poverty if we aren’t careful!

If we don’t guard our hearts against the constant temptation and desire for more pleasure in our lives we begin to feel entitled to the pleasures we desire.  For example if you work a lot of hours at your job during the week you may feel like you should be entitled to let loose and spend your money on yourself on the weekend.  While being pregnant I’ve had to fight against the temptation that because I’m growing a small human inside me that I should be entitled to treating myself…daily!

It’s not wrong to go on vacation or go out to eat or just spend money to do something fun. However if we are not budgeting our “fun money” we end up having our desires for pleasure control us rather than us controlling our desires! It’s about self-control! If all of our financial responsibilities to God and to man are met and we have money to spend on fun by all means! Let loose! Play mini-golf! If you don’t have the money though look for alternatives to have fun that don’t cost money—go walk along Lake Michigan, invite friends over for a game night, or paint your own nails! God wants us to practice self-control in all areas of our life including in how we spend our money!
