Joshua 15:1-63
Luke 18:18-43
Psalm 86:1-17
Proverbs 13:9-10

Verse of the day:

When Jesus heard his answer, he said, “There is still one thing you haven’t done. Sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” (Luke 18:22)

How many times have you read this portion of scripture and were glad that you weren’t the rich ruler on the other side of this conversation with Jesus?  All he had asked was what did he had to do to have eternal life.  Being a man of influence and of means the man probably assumed that he would have to do something great or make a large donation but I doubt that he thought that the answer would ask him to leave EVERYTHING behind and follow Jesus.  The cost was too much for the man and he walked away sad because he wanted to keep his stuff more than he wanted to follow Jesus and have eternal life.

How sad that he couldn’t let go of what he was holding onto to go after Jesus!  If we look at our own lives we all have things that we are tempted to hold on to instead of Jesus.  For some it might be our possessions, for others it might be a relationship, for others it might be a habit or addiction, or maybe for others it’s an attitude or bad mindset.  Put yourself in the conversation with Jesus—Is there anything that is holding you back from fully letting go of everything to follow Jesus?

Jesus never asks us to let go of something to hurt us. It may hurt to let that relationship, activity, or possession go but it is always ultimately for our good.  He loved us so much that He gave His life so that we could be in eternal relationship with Him. What might He be asking you to give Him today?
