When You Don't Feel Like It
Posted: Monday, October 5
Verse of the day:
I think of God, and I moan, overwhelmed with longing for his help. You don’t let me sleep. I am too distressed even to pray! (Psalms 77:3-4)
A friend of mine has a great saying, “When you don’t feel like praying, talk to God about it.” There are times in our lives that we feel overwhelmed. We may be stuck, not knowing what direction to head next. We may be stumbling over past sin, past hurt, or present pain. We may be struggling to feel as close to God as we used to. In those moments the one thing we need seems to be the farthest from our minds.
Prayer must not be based upon how we feel. We need to be in the habit of talking to God every day. Can you imagine how your other relationships would be if we only talked to each other when we felt like it? Lack of communication is one of the greatest killers of relationship. If we want our relationship with God to be thriving, we must communicate with him.
Sometimes prayer seems silly. I mean, God already knows what we are thinking and feeling, right? Why do I need to vocalize it? Communication is about more than talking. Good communication involves active listening. We need to hear what each other are saying. If we want to hear what God is saying, then through prayer, we need to start the conversation. Prayer is about communicating with God and hearing from God.
