Foolish Heritage // Saturday, October 11

Posted: Saturday, October 11

One Year Bible Reading Guide:

Jeremiah 16:16-18:23
1 Thessalonians 4:1-5:3
Psalm 81:1-16
Proverbs 25:6-8

Verse of the day:

Lord, you are my strength and fortress, my refuge in the day of trouble! Nations from around the world will come to you and say, “Our ancestors left us a foolish heritage, for they worshiped worthless idols. Can people make their own gods? These are not real gods at all!” (Jeremiah 16:19-20)

The Lord is our strength and fortress, our refuge in the day of trouble! And yet, so many times we go on an exhausting search for what we already possess. We look at financial security as a position of strength, only to find ourselves vulnerable in a market melt-down. Our gated communities are supposed to protect us—to provide refuge from potential threats from the outside; but then we realize people know how to scale fences and walls.

Far too often we place our hope, trust and security in things that will disappoint and bring us down, instead of the “One” who will satisfy, and raise us up. We should learn, from past experience, that when we possess God, we already have it all. Let’s not do what too many have done before us, and leave a “foolish heritage” – foolish because we trusted in things that have no eternal value.

Leave the “worthless idols” behind; the best heritage we can leave for our children, family and friends, is a life that exampled what it meant to live for God—that’s an example that carries with it eternal value.
