Let Me Just Vent For A Sec

2 John 1:1-13
Verse of the day:
Fools vent their anger, but the wise quietly hold it back. (Proverbs 29:11)
Ever tell someone, “ I just need to vent to you?” I’ve been there. I’ve been so frustrated with people and situations that I felt the best possible thing I could do for my sanity and stress management was to vomit it out to a third party.
There’s a difference in this verse from talking with a counselor and venting. Talking through a situation or problem with a counselor is extremely helpful and Biblical. Complaining about a person or situation to someone else is downright ugly. In most cases, when we vent to someone about another person its to tear that person down because of what they’ve done. Another way to describe it is gossip. As we all know, gossip does nothing but rip people and organizations apart. Giving it the code ‘venting’ doesn’t change the fact that we’re talking about someone else in a negative way. It’s never fun to hear that someone’s been talking about us behind our back.
The wise person is the one who learns to control their tongue and not spread news via venting. It can be tough to hold our tongues, especially when we know we’ve been legitimately wronged. The next time you feel like venting to your comrades, take break and remember what the Bible says. It’s better to keep it to yourself, and better yet, tell God about it instead! Then go deal with that person privately and fix it. The church is better when we’re united, not venting to each other.
