God, The Best Gifter

Verse of the day:
So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him. (Matthew 7:11)
I love this verse. Overtime, it has become one of my best parenting strategies. It’s not rare that one of my sons has an “I want” meltdown. Items range from toys to dessert to an extra episode of their favorite cartoon. As I see the whines unlocking, I quickly get their attention. “Wait!” The room freezes as they award me three more seconds to solve their problem before the world collapses. I ask this one question, “Does daddy like giving you good gifts or bad gifts?” They take a breath. They know the answer. “Good gifts.”
When heart rates descend, we talk about the good gifts that we’ve been given. We talk about the food we ate for dinner, the new clothes mommy bought us, and how we’ve already watched two exciting episodes of SuperWhy. Motivation is everything. My kids need to know that I delight in them. When I am withholding something from them, they still need to know that I want the best for them. They need to know.
They also need to know that daddy is flawed. Daddy wants to give good gifts but sometimes comes up short. My selfishness impairs me. My anger has the power to shortchange my good intentions. My life is full of unpredictable mistakes. But if I, in my dusty humanity, can manage to dream a bright future for my children… If I, with the scars of selfishness and anger on my lips, can sacrifice my best for the love of my kids, HOW MUCH MORE! How much more could a perfect father achieve! How much deeper could their heavenly father breathe life into their possibilities! Praise God from whom ALL blessings flow. Our father is good, and he has good gifts in store.
