One Year Bible Reading Guide:

Deuteronomy 16:1-17:20
Luke 9:7-27
Psalm 72:1-20
Proverbs 12:8-9

Verse of the day:

He must always keep that copy with him and read it daily as long as he lives. That way he will learn to fear the Lord his God by obeying all the terms of these instructions and decrees. (Deuteronomy 17:19)

In this passage of scripture the Israelites are steps away from entering the land God had promised them and had been leading them to for years. God makes it very clear that when the time comes for the Israelites to establish a monarchy form of government that there are to be very specific guidelines for their king. One of those regulations was to study God’s instructions over and over, keeping it by his side whenever his sits on the throne, and using it as his grounds for ruling. God lays it out plain and simple that by studying these regulations, the king will rule for a long time and will benefit the entire nation.

While we may never be a king or president of a nation, we do play the role as king over our own lives. We dictate every day how we are going to rule and regulate our heart and actions. Just as the king of Israel needed to keep God’s word close to his heart as he reigned, we also much keep the Bible actively a part of our lives. God’s word and instructions aren’t exclusively designed for obeying Him; they benefit our lives by keeping us safe in His protection and the opportunity to experience life with ultimate fulfillment.

It’s so crucial for our wellbeing that we make God’s word an important part of our lives every single day. By continually reading over it, reflecting on scripture, and memorizing as much as we can we instill a fear of God that, just like the kings of Israel, will give us a long happy life.
